Launching Nov 7: Samsung Windows 8 phone, tablet, hybrids

Update 2, November 1: It seems that Samsung Electronics Philippines is pushing through with its original plan of launching the Samsung ATIV S phone along with its Windows 8 devices. Update 1, October 17: On October 15, Samsung director for IT Eric Sulit confirmed that the Samsung ATIV S Windows 8 smartphone will be unveiled on November 7, too. Product marketing head for mobile phones Coco Domingo, however, informed us last night that they’re not sure about the Windows 8 phone launch yet. – Alora Uy Guerrero

Apparently, Samsung Electronics Philippines‘ future lineup includes the following: Samsung ATIV S, Samsung ATIV Tab, Samsung ATIV Smart PC, and Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro. Or all four IFA 2012 devices running Microsoft’s upcoming platform. The Windows 8 quartet’s launch date: November 7, which is less than a month away. Samsung ATIV S

The Samsung ATIV S is the world’s first Windows Phone 8 smartphone announced. It meshes a massive Super AMOLED display, powerful hardware, and next-gen software in an 8.7mm-thin frame. The display, measuring 4.8 inches diagonally, is toughened by second-gen Gorilla Glass, and the engine room sees a dual-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with a 1GB RAM. Round the back, there’s an 8-megapixel cam with auto-focus and LED flash.

Samsung ATIV Tab

The Samsung ATIV Tab is a 10-inch slate with sleek, 8.9mm profiles. It packs the RT variant of Windows 8 as well as a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait processor and 2GB of RAM. Also on hand is NFC tech and USB and micro-HDMI ports. The battery is likely long-lasting, packing 8200mAh cells. The rear features a 5-megapixel main cam, and the front has a 1.9-megapixel sensor.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC

Boasting a convertible design to bring the Windows notebook-tablet hybrid idea to execution, the Koreans’ ATIV Smart PC is functional as it is portable. The 1366 x 768 touchscreen measures 11.6 inches and delivers 400 nits of brightness. Beneath the screen, things go upmarket with an Atom mobile processor and a SGX545 graphics chip both from Intel; 2GB of RAM; an 8-megapixel rear camera; and a 2-megapixel front-facer. Like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Samsung Galaxy Note II, the ATIV Smart PC comes with a pressure-sensitive digitizer stylus.

As much as the Samsung ATIV Smart PC delivers the full-on Windows 8 experience, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro ups the ante further with an 11.6-inch 1080p display and way-better insides. Powering the hybrid is a third-generation Ivy Bridge Core processor teamed up with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Similar to its lower-tier sibling, a digitized stylus makes an appearance here as well.
